If a person steals to use drugs to feel better in life, should they be punished?

Keep in mind, you have to be the Judge. You make the law. You can not use preset influences or perswations of your life in aswering this; only your spirituality.

Whatever will give the lowest sum of harm done is the best option - punishment for its own sake is for sadists.

If the circumstances were such that a jail sentence would just keep them in a life of crime, then I would order them to rehab.

If the circumstances were such that a jail sentence would wake them up/ stoke them into change, then that would be appropriate.

It may also involve doing something for the owner of the stolen things as repatriation.

If stealing was lawful we would have mayhem...laws are there for a reason. Also, it is one of the ten commandments not to steal. having mercy and forgiveness is another issue. i would tend to be lenient in this case, but still have to punish them for stealing.
