This was a real animal. Do a search for "thylacine" on the Internet. The last known living one died in a New York City Zoo in the 1930's. They are likely extinct in the wild. They were only found on Tasmania and when sheep were introduced to that island the government offered a bounty for them due to their suspected predation on sheep. They were hunted out of existence. Occasionally, someone will claim to see one but most experts consider them extinct. It would be hard to find them if they still exist in small numbers as they are (were) secretive nocturnal animals. They are an amazing looking animal! It is hard to believe it was real...

It was a real species of animal, but unfortunately was extinct by the 1920s (or around that time), due to hunting. It was only found on the island of Tasmania.
You can look them up in Australian History books- we learnt about the Tasmanian Tiger at school.

Tasmanian marsupial tigers, or thylacines, were a real animal, but are thought to have gone extinct in the early part of the 20th century - the last one died in a zoo. Some people do believe they're still alive though- there have been sightings by all sorts of people, even monks, who swear by what they've seen.

The Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, is believed to be extinct. There are photographs of them and preserved specimens so obviously they were around at some point. There have been a few unconfirmed sightings since their said extinction in 1936. The last known living thylacine died in the Hobart Zoo on September 7, 1936. Her (yes HER) name was Benjamin. (Sep. 7 is my birthday so I have a fascination for thylacines.)
