I used to work at Build-A-Bear and I'm 18. It was a fun place to work and I saw plenty of teenage guys coming in with their girlfriends to build one and also husbands coming in with their wives. When you're in high school or middle school though you tend to be judged about every little thing. I believe Build-A-Bear is fun if you still have a little bit of kid inside of you. Eventhough they target children, they are also great ideas for individualism, birthday, "I'm Sorry", "Get Well Soon", mirrage, graduation, etc. etc. Since you are in high/middle school people will probably judge them but if you still have a child-like side to you then they are fine. Although building them may not be as fun for a 18 year old as a 3 year old, it still is an experience.
Try it out. Who cares what people think at school? Do what you like.

Well, yes and no. It is a great activity for kids. My 3 y.o., now 4, made one this summer and she talks about it like it's a real person! But I would never make one for myself. I think it's cool for kids, but not for adults. If you're in jr. hi or high school, that's the gray area where you just have to be yourself. If you think it's cool, flaunt your originality by creating a one of a kind bear! If you think it's totally dorky, just roll your eyes and find something better to do!

Okay, I actaully worked at Build-a-Bear for over a year (yeah and I'm a straight guy too). It isn't "gay" to have a stuffed animial. Honestly it is kinda neat that you can personalize a bear (or dog or cat or frog) for yourself. For a little kid you can just increase the imagination and have something that the child can really latch on to cause it is theirs and they made it. It makes ver a very very neat gift for a dog loving nurse to dress up a dog like a nurse and give it to them. It is a novel idea and something that I would recommend for just about any one who needs a good gift for someone. If the company is still around I intend on taking my child to BAB so they can make their own bear.

It depends on age.
Above like, 12, yeah a little dorky but still fine.
Pushing sixteen? build a bears should be a thing of your past.

I think they are cute for kids, they seem to target young children even with their advertising. There are things they could do with the build-a-bears to make them more appealing to adults but it does not seem like adults are their target market. If you look at their website they talk about parties at the Build A Bear shops. Young children usually have those kinds of parties.

It's fun to take a child and let them do it. I have one and love it because I collect bears and it is the candy corn one.
