This is specified in your legal paperwork from the Divorce or Separation -- and usually there are conditions or time limits in them. So look at the paperwork you have to determine when and how long and how much.

I dont actually know but on divorce court that judge always asks the wife how shes been surviving if theres been a long seperation (6mos.to a year) and if its been w/out the husbands income she usually does not award spousal suppt. if you are able bodied and capable of providing for yourself why would you even want to ask for spousal suppt. unless its just to get even w/ your soon to be ex or you just plain greedy.nothing personal just my opinion

All states are different in the way they view this issue. I would suggest calling and attorney as they will usually give you an initial consultation for free. Best of luck.
