Start with why diversity is important to you. Did you go to a diverse school, live in a diverse community? Or is it the opposite - to you live in an area that isn't diverse and you want diversity to help expand your cultural horizons? Think of ways diversity has impacted you and go from there -

A simple guideline for writing any essay is to use 5 paragraphs. First tell them what your are going to tell them - make it three things. Next write one paragraph for each of your three points. Finally, wrap it up in a summary paragraph - in other words tell them what you told them. You can always expand this format after you write it if needed.

Now, for the topic just choose three things about diversity that you feel comfortable with. Write about three reasons diversity is important.

Before you submit your essay proofread it, proofread it and proofread it again. Then have some one else (guess what?) Proofread it !

A college wants to see what the importance of diversity is to YOU. So, start by brainstorming. Sit down and write out why it's important. Add anything you can think of. If you've got questions, write them down. Find answers to them. Find a quote that you think sums up your view...etc. Then, map out what you want your paper to say. Write an outline. I didn't use to think that sort of thing would help, but boy did it when I wrote my first one! ^_^
