I'm the director of a gender education group and i'm just curious to see what sort of answers people will give to this question. I mostly like to inspire conversation. But, i also feel it is important to study what people are thinking, in order to offer better education about the matter. Thank you for your time.

Responding to some answers i received: The umbrella term is trans, not transgendered. ^_^ some people are nongendered, like myself. Then what if i experience sex dysphoria sepparate from my body?
Look up the group: Gender Schmender, on myspace. or the memories for prof fallen2gabriel on livejournal. ^_^

In response to one person's answer about transexuals and men and women, I wanted to add that i also study transexuals who identified as non-gender.

well, i read about the difference between the terms on wikipedia... and it seems to me that someone who is transexual is a man or woman, not the gender they are born with; and someone who is transgendered feels that they are not the gender they are born with but may feel like they are a third gender, or the opposite gender, etc.
i don't know if i got that right.... if so, i myself feel i am transgendered because i don't really feel like a woman but i have no interest in going through an operation to become a man.
i hope you get some more answers... i enjoy seeing intelligent questions on here.

Well, no. As I understand it, transgendered is an umbrella term used to describe all kinds of people who associate with genders that don't line up with their physical sex, including transsexuals. So a transsexual is a type of transgendered person, but a transgendered person isn't necessarily transsexual. They could also be intersexed or transvestites or genderfucks or something like that.
