I am looking to buy a new laptop. Currently, I use a Compaq R3140US. It works pretty good still, only about a year old. But, I travel quite a bit, so I want something that weighs a little less. I have a rolling bag, but still would like to simplify my life ;-)

Anyhow, I also use my laptop as my main desktop PC and use it pretty much all day. That is the main reason I went with this one. Anyhow, I'm trying to find a moderately heavy computer, with a large enough screen to work on everyday, including speed and monitor size. But, I'm also hoping to spend a little under a $1000.

Do you have any suggestions for what to look at? I have been using HP and Compaq for about 6 years and really had no problems. Dell is my other option, but not sure how the quality compares to HP/Compaq

Finally, is AMD Turion better or is Intel Duel Core better.

Again, any advice or ideas would help!

One other important factor I really forgot to mention... Is it possible to buy a laptop anymore (that is decent) without a brightview screen. While I absolutely love them, my laptop mostly sits with a window behind it and I am almost positive that is going to cause problems. I also use it outside and in bright lights a lot, so I think it could be bad.

Also, if you could recommend some laptops that you think maybe I should look into, that would be great!

I am in the same place. I would start out by eliminating models. Pick a screen size that feels comfortable, and a processor. The Core Duo's outpreform the AMD Turion in performance, and battery life. The Duos are also "Dual Core" which basically means that they have integrated two processors onto one chip, (all you need to know: core duo is much better)

For the budget issue, try dell outlet. These are PC's that are returned and refurbished/repaired by dell.

Also, if you are consitering a dell consult a site like dealsea.com for coupon codes.

Well that should not be hard to do. I as far as brand, the HP and Dell are both good buys in the laptop world. I would not touch a Compaq.. I would go with an AMD64 2400+ which would give you plenty of power for anything. And a 15.4 inch screen. that should not cost you more than $700 from Dell. Unless you are big into Videos you should not need a hard drive bigger than a 60GB. Try to get at least 512MB of RAM and you are good to go.

I have excellent experience with HP laptops. I wouldn't buy anything else.
