Astronomy is boring and tedious? I don't think so!

Anyway, to start it's easiest to major in physics or astronomy in college, but not totally necessary. Definitely take lots of physics courses in college, though.

Then you go to graduate school in astronomy or astrophysics and get your Ph.D.

Then you get a job as an astronomer, or as a post-doc at a university and then an astronomy professor at a university.

Ah....Space....the final frontier ! Well the real question is professional or amatuer being an astronomer covers both. I am one and have been both. I do not have a PH.D. MA, BS or any other degree and the only BS I am good at is throwing it. However (and my answers have that word a lot) I have been studying the stars since 1966. I have done most of my work on my own. I have worked as Planetarium operator in Charleston W. Va, I have assisted, though not in a paying aspect, at Leander McCormick Observatory U Va and swung on the end of the 26 inch refractor. I have given a lot of classroom talks to local schools here in the new hampshire seacoast. So I consider myself an astronomer, and a scientist.

Well one way is to study what interests you about astronomy . Another is to look up different astronomers on the web thru observatories and ask questions!

First you realize that most of it is tremendously boring and tedious mathmatical work, followed by scanning the sky in minute increments, usually seeing absolutely nothing interesting.

same question here, just study hard in school, maintain excellent GPA, and people will come looking for you, i mean like you will be offered paths as you go down the roads.

One must be an expert on doing your own research.
