When I needed to buy a marker for CD's, the sales person told me to use Sharpies. He also said to just write on the top - like the other answerers in this forum!

Yes as long as it is on the front of the CD and not the side that is read to be played. Keep in mind though, sharpies are usually permanent markers.

It works, but there are also markers that are available that are designed to write on CD and DVD's.

Yes, you can write on the label side with no problem. I've done it many times.
