Dark matter is non-luminous matter, that cannot be directly detected by observing any form of electromagnetic radiation (light), but whose existence is suggested because of the effects of its gravity on the rotation rate of galaxies and the presence of clusters of galaxies.

So, will the Universe recollapse then?

Despite the fact that up to 90 percent of the mass of the universe may still be made up of dark matter, cosmologists don't think that it would be enough to have gravity halt the expansion and cause a recollapse. This thinking is due in part to observation of supernovae in 1997 which indicated that the expansion is still accelerating and not slowing down at all.

A theory that says that gravity acts the same in all parts of the universe. However, in some areas of the universe there isn't enough visible matter to account for the gravitation pull. Therefore it is possible that there is something called "dark matter" in the universe that can't be seen but it exists and influences the forces of gravity.

Dark matter is that, those parts of the universe that have no light but what exactly is still being studied.

The term dark matter refers to some kind of matter that only interacts gravitationally. it can be no more than about four per cent ordinary matter, but the rest is unknown. fritz zwicky discovered dark matter in 1933.

Dark matter refers to matter that does not emit or reflect enough electromagnetic radiation (such as light, x-rays) to be detected directly, but whose presence may be inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter.
