Hi there :
By the time I looked at your question there were a lot of other answers above, but, ....
I have a few hundred computers.
I have a few hundred printers.
SO, everyone states clearly YES, you can just install as many printers as you want....
I wish life were so simple....
You can often install a great many printers, but you have to be careful, since you can add one simple printer and the drivers and resources will kill another printer that you have been using just fine.
There are no rules to the printer game, and surprisingly, two printers from the SAME company, for example, HP are more likely to kill each other, and adding a third HP will cause terrible problems. They do not have enough resources to test every single printer with every single printer, and in the HP case, the
newest printer often OVERWRITES a file that is used by an older printer, which then cannot work.
I have noticed that some HP printers will KILL a Lexmark printer,
and some newer USB printers will cause problems with older Parallel laser printers.
The odds that you have two printers that conflict is " LOW " but
install the second printer, ( with the second printer connected ) and
test with a test print immediately, and try changing the SETTINGS such as quality and paper, and printing something in colour or more complicated. I find that drivers may allow a new printer to " work" but will interfere with the settings' ability to change -- WHILE the print dialogue is open - you can only change settings when the PRINT dialogue is not active.
Each conflict has its own strange behaviour, and, as in the example above, once I know what the conflicts are, I just work around them.
Sometimes I can get around conflicts by installing one printer on the USB, and another, if it has the connector, on the Parallel. This is often the easiest solution, since the DRIVER DLL's and Terminate Stay Resident ( TSR ) type programs do not conflict.
Sometimes you can get around the problems by going into the
( in this example Win98 ) MSCONFIG listings, and turning off 2, 3 , 4 or more startup files that pre-load the printer into windows, even though you are not using it. These programs can open a toolbox ICON on the taskbar, Check the ink, go online for updates, link to TWAIN drivers, etc. etc. and if turned OFF, will not harm anything, but OFF, will not conflict with other printers that have programs that do the same tasks. I generally turn EVERYTHING off in the equivalent of win98's MSCONFIG, or use
built in software in XP, to dissable dozens of useless programs running in the background, that are rarely needed. Window Washer programs do the same thing in a more user freindly fashion.
SOOOooooo.......
Go ahead, install the software for the second printer, and you will probably be lucky in that the two printers work just fine.
Immediately, if the new printer tests out ok, test the "old" printer with the same tests, and see if it works as per normal.
If so, you win.
If you find strange behaviour, try to figure out what aspect is not functioning well, and choose which printer you want more programs working in the background. On the printer that you do not want or need all the background programs running, use whatever software ( Start / RUN / MSCONFIG etc. ) you have available to dissable the unnecessary programs. This may free up
conflicts. I turn off all software "helper" programs on ALL printers, just out of practise.
One last way to remove some strange conflicts is to remove all printers, and install the SECOND printer , FIRST, then install the "old" printer, second, since then, some of the overwritten files are left in place or re-ordered so that both will work.
I can have 8 printers working on any computer without problems, and sometimes, I can't get two to work together without compromises.
Hope that you don't have conflicts, but if you do, some of the suggestions above might allow you to get around enough of them to at least print the work that you need, with the least amount of
problems... if you are pre-warned that there might be a conflict, you won't be so surprised or frustrated. Having a conflict will, in
my experience, not interfere with anything else other than the printers, so that you really don't have to worry about damaging the Operating System, etc.
Good Luck

Yes you can, after you do, then choose which will be the default one, right click, set as default, that will be the one that prints when you click on the printer icon, and when you go to File, Print, it will display all printers, fax software, pdf software, to choose from. Good Luck
