I guess most of these answers are correct...but I think most cashiers today have an attitude problem, and very few have any courtesy for their customers. They should have a lesson on courteous customer service. A lot of them just don't get it.

There are cultural differences involved here. In the US, we consider it rude to put the money on the counter. We expect people to put the money into our hands. There are practical considerations involved here (such as having to look away from the register while picking up coins that may roll away on the floor, etc.).

In China, everyone puts the money on the counter, and gets it back that way. People don't like handing money to each other. Then, again, among orthodox Jews, it is considered bad to touch any unclean woman (i.e., on her period), so since I can't know if a woman is on her period or not, as a Jew I should never hand someone the money (because our hands may accidentally touch), but place it on the counter, or even better go to a different store and find a male cashier instead.

Being an ex cashier I can answer that one. The polite way is to hand the cashier the money. How do you feel when a cashier throws your change on the counter instead of putting it in your hands?

I remember when I used to work at a fast food joint and I worked on the drive thru... some customers would set the money on the counter of the window, and the wind would blow it down the street before I even had a chance to open the window. Then they would yell at me because apparently it's my fault they're too stupid to realize that it would blow away unless they had placed it in my hand.

It is kind of rude, its a subtle way of telling them that they're not worthy of being touched.

Oh and Deb... I worked in customer service for 2 years, and I always tried my hardest to be polite to my customers, to treat them the way I would expect to be treated. Let me tell you this can get to be a very hard thing to maintain when you've got customers that cuss you out because yu don't have the kind of soda they want, or because their kid doesn't like tomatoes... I might have seen one polite customer a day if I was lucky. So yeah... I guess I developed a little bit of an "attitude problem".

As an cashier, it's very nice for a customer to give them the money to them. After picking up money from the counter all day it would be nice for someone to hand it to you.

Some people take the time to look for small change in their pockets and things. If they place the money on the counter, I don't know when they are done and ready to hand the money to me. They might be leaving it on the table to look for spare change. Also, I don't want to grab at your money without your permission because technically, it is still yours and you have the option of not purchasing the merchandise. It makes things easier if you place the money into our hands.

Because, first off, it's rude, and second, it's so hard to pick up change off of a flat surface...Is it so hard to just place the money
in the cashiers hand?

It is rude not to hand it too them, cause it is hard to get coins off the counter, cause it is flat! Not to mention, when they have a line of customers it takes them awhile to peel each coin off the counter! They are waiting for you to hand them the money, so why not hand it to them! They put your change in your hands, should they place it on the counter for you to peel off before you leave?

Everyone else has already given you the correct answer. My question is, if you know it upsets them, why do you do it? Germs? Good grief, put some hand sanitizer on afterwards if you're that freaked out by the exchange of money. If that's not it, then you're just plain rude.
