My clues will have to be a little vague. The usual things written about him are a dead give-away. Okay, his first movie was in 1947.
He made some more...one of which he'll never live down. Came to tv and made history. He has received awards from many law enforcement groups. I feel in love with him as a child,and never fell out. He has many sites on the web. A contest was recently held. Contestants needed to state how he,his show, etc, had impacted their life. Winner got a phone call from him. Did I win? I'm posting this question,right? I'd have died if he had called me. One LAST clue....he was a total hunk of a man ..tall,dark and handsome!!!

Just for some brownie points...his first movie in 1947 was The Farmer's Daughter. The movie he'll never live down...The Thing. Made history with Gunsmoke as one of the longest running TV shows.
