Innnteresting one. Assuming for the purposes of answering that we're talking about a toilet seat, there are of course four main functions that a toilet is required to deal with - two for women, two for men. Women generally prefer to sit down for both. Men usually sit down for one, and stand for one. That means there are three occasions of necessary seat-downage to one of necessary (or preferred) seat-uppage. Three to one means immature guys don't have a leg to stand on, and it falls to US to ensure the seat is ready for 75% of its active duty when we leave, not just the 25% that pertains exclusively to us. And no, women shouldn't put ithe seat up when they're done - again, the numbers are on their side, guys, give it up! Yes, real men put the seat down.
Now, on the offchance that you're in a men's room, go nuts - the numbers settle favourably back to 50-50 and it doesn't matter if you leave the seat up or put it down when you're done.
If of course we're not talking about toilet seats but something else like car seats, then all my mathematics goes out of the window, but the answer remains the same - real men put whatever up and whatever down when asked by real women.

"Real men" install their own urinal so it's not an issue--otherwise a kind man would put the seat down.
