If you are talking about jewelry, it should be stamped somewhere. It is often hard to find the stamp, however, and every once in a while, if the piece was made in a foreign country, it is stamped in something other than Arabic numerals.
The easier way to tell is to just pop into a jewelry store at a mall. Most of them will answer questions for free. Simply have the actual jeweler who does the work (not the salesperson, who may not really know) take a look at it. They should be able to tell you for sure, and also if it is not 14k, but is gold, what karat it is.

The pawn shops should have done an acid test in front of you to show you that the gold was not real. If it were real, gold should show no color change. Metal such as brass will turn green using the acid. The magnet test will not work on brass as it is not magnetic. A simple test you can do that could determine if a gold chain could be fake is to smell it. If the chain has a sour smell to it, that would indicate it is brass. Gold will have no odor to it. Your best bet is to take your chain to an independent goldsmith ( not a chain store jeweler in your local Mall ) and have them check it out for you. There is a lot of fake gold jewelry going around and a goldsmith can tell you definitely if your chain is gold or not

Most of the time, real gold is stamped, but if it isn't, ask your local jewelry store.

there is something called a stone and acid test, you can get one at any jeweler but it's usually if you deal with alot of jewelry because the test might cost more than the piece you want to test.
