A music producer is very very different from say a TV or film producer where they're more to do with the running of the operation, the logistics of it, the money etc. The actual music producer is the person who decides the whole 'sound' of a song, from who the musicians are, to what instruments and sounds are used, even to how the vocal is performed.
More often than not the producer is the one who sits at the computer programming in the beats, playing in the parts, arranging the song, basically MAKING the music. In most cases, they are usually also co-writing and co-performing.

I think the producer becomes a member of the band, while they're recording, and he gets a percentage of the album's sale. I think the producer is like the boss, who is in charge of everything. They have to make the artist give great performances, and I think in general help them get the song to the highest level possible. They know recording tricks like where to put the mics and stuff.

They're in the studio with the artist during the time of recording so they have an input on each song. The artist goes in to the studio with just the bones of a song usually - the producer has to help flesh it out.

Producers make the music you are hearing. The beat, the bridge, everything. examples in hip-hop are Kanye West, The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams, RZA just to name a few. Before Kanye West was known for rapping you were listening to other people rap over the "beats" he made/produced.

Producer, in any art form, is synonymous with money. In other words, they are charged with the responsibility of bankrolling the project. They may line up investors, or fund the project out of pocket. To the extent they contribute to the mechanics of the effort varies greatly. P. Diddy is very hands on, but others may act more like silent partners.

They work with the artist to get them to do it the way they want it done. They may adjust the lyrics, music, arrangements, etc. They promote the finished product. They do a lot.

Fiddles about a lot, makes changes that aren't wanted or needed, makes a general pest of himself, and then gets a cut of the profits for being a pain in the ****.
