It`s not just in schools where this is becoming more and more commonplace, children just can`t be "bov vered" anymore, don`t need to get a job, the dole will give me a house and pay for my stuff, the teachers being stripped of their powers of discipline also won`t help, with some being too scared to go into work fearing what the unruly minority will do to them today. That attitude then spills over into adulthood, don`t need a job, can`t get a job, so sign on, frustration then sets in and the only way some people can get rid of their frustration is to lash out at others because of their inadequacies and then blame society at large because they didn`t get a proper education. Then they dare to have children of their own and the attitude spills over onto them and the circle starts again but with less power to do anything about it. The quicker I get off this stinking Island the better!!!

you are disheartened by society, I'm disheartened by the world. I might be older than you but over the past 15 years there has been a shift towards a less respectful and caring element in England on a local level and I'm sure most people here have noticed it in London and the bigger cities and towns.
I noticed it more when I stayed in Dorset recently and came back to London town and the contrast was so clear to me. The lack of care and regard, the spitting on our streets, the rudeness and selfishness, the garbage people drop, the violence I see where I live all reflect to me the undercurrent of hopelessness and despair we see on the news, reports from the east and the effect on our planet, I wonder what I have let my children's kids in for and that hurts me deeply.
this is not a world that I like, it is not a world I like to be part of so the only thing to do is to try and join something to make little changes I suppose and have a say about it and be with others who think the same and do care an do want to make a difference.
there some of us out there like you and we must keep our end up and keep some level of what you call 'good' and that does come from manners and grammar, don't let others pull you into the the apathy.

Most of the answers already given are excellent and provide some of the reasons why this questioner is becoming more and more disheartened with society.
Society isn't breaking down but in an ever changing world boundaries are being stretched, tested and put under great new pressures.
Both parents are now working as a general rule and the pre school child has not benefited.
Ethnic tensions too will settle as time progresses and as all parts of our great nation learn the benefits of tolerance and peaceful cohabitation.
There are always exceptions which sadly make the headlines, where would the media be without bad news? and if we want to stay on a truthful theme, our prisons will always have capacity problems.
As to a total breakdown of society, no, the heart of this nation and it's people will always beat.

I agree. Good grammar is important, but it's not near as important as good manners. Common courtesy, being considerate and respectful towards others should be a given. The world would be a lot better place if more people would at least TRY to live by the Golden Rule. It's hardly even attempted anymore. Even though the great majority doesn't anymore, I still do my best. I think a lot of it has to do with how people raise their kids nowadays. I've been working the front desk of a major brand hotel off and on for about 6years. I've had many different jobs dealing with the general public, and nothing comes close to working the front desk at a hotel. And what I found was that everyone is out for "me and mine," and that's about it. Not always, but the major majority. I discovered adults are nothing more than big kids, and kids are nothing more than small adults.

A deep question for this time of night. Good grammar doesn't necessarily accompany good manners, but I have to agree that society does appear to be breaking down. Not everywhere, but I have noticed a general decline in trust, co-operation and tolerance. I often wonder if this is due to speed - not the drug, but the pace of society. The pace of development has been so rapid over the past decades that society itself has not been able to keep pace. There have been / are / will be issues that are of vital importance, but their impact has not been considered fully in a moral or societal light.
For better or worse we live in a world of soundbites where there is "no such thing as society", only individuals (thanks a bloody lot Thatcher and your divisive policies: you created the dole culture by destroying communities). Greed is good, everyone is commodity, children are becoming mini-adults who miss out on childhood. Society is haemorraging and now we have estates of haves and have nots.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but I feel that this system is not working and is not sustainable. Short term gain - long term pain.

You should try living in Liverpool pal. It's fast becoming a lawless town. The police don't bother with the small things or rather they don't have the man power. then the boundaries are pushed back as to what is small stuff!!!
There are children walking the streets with the attitude of "if I want something I'll take it" if confronted you're asked "what you gonna do about it?"
Obviously we'd all like to put the little toe rag in his place but for fear of repercussions from some equally dim friend or relative.
Society has had it's day, it's already crumbling. Now we're just waiting to see how long it'll last.
This country has been given up. wherever you go people are saying " i can't wait to get off this island.
Where are you gonna go??? everyone else is coming here!!!
Doh!!! Now my temple is pulsing again... It really winds me up!

Communication is so fast there's no time for being correct yet exams are all about accuracy. Social breakdown occurs when students don't get the right qualifications and jobs... We must all insist on a basic level of grammatical accuracy and of course social etiquette.
The msn and messenger generation (often) only understand abbreviations... but as for social breakdown... I think new kinds of societies are springing up due to these new technologies, we just have to go with the flow. New etiquette is required. Out with the old and in with the new.

Time and tides wait for no one.
We reach an age where society seems wrong and it is because their behaviour is becoming the norm rather than what we were brought up to believe. It is all part of the ageing process.
Just because society is behaving in a different way does not make it right though and that is why there is a so called generation gap.
Having said the above, I am definitely out of step and have been for years!

The grammer thing is not really important... Its other things like people pushed to be more competative and not so community minded.
Plus all the evil following of male dominance abrahamic brain dead relgions like islam and chrisitianity instead of the intelligence and wisdom that came from the post 60s generations...
Most of the spelling here is probably got more to do with typos and people more interested in the important stuff ie the topic, question, and subject...
What you deem a breakdown of society...
Is it kids joining mugger gangs ...bad or strenghted woemn and gay rights... good, or better contraceptive use... good

It's been a slow process, but the effects are becoming more and more visible. That, of course, is thanks to the super information highway *internet* and all of our news stations *isn't there like 30 channels of various news?*
If we want it corrected, then we need to take the future in our hands and shape it up. Start with your kids and teach them morals, manners, and respect.
It's disheartening to see, I'll admit, when something as simple as holding a door open, or giving up your seat for an elderly couple is a big deal. It used to be expected.
