I have a large penny from 1817 and I am looking to find out is value? I was told it depends on where it was minted, but I can't tell. Thanks for your help.

Your term penny is telling me it is not a United States coin. If it has the bust of liberty on the obverse with stars around her and on the reverse it has, United States Of America around a wreath, with one cent in the wreath, then it is an American Large cent. There were two types one had 15 stars on the obverse around the liberty head the other had 13. At that time there was only one mint and that was in Philadelphia. The 15 star one is the rarest. In grade good the 13 star sells for about $30.00 and the 15 star $40.00. In higher grades both are worth a lot more. A coin dealer can grade it for you. Have him or her explain how they got the grade though and if it does not sound right, try another dealer.
Checking on Coins from Great Britain it looks like they didn't make a copper one penny that year, only a small silver one. So you must mean cent

Forget Soccertc. It may only be worth a cent but if it excellent condition, it could be worth more. Go to your public library and check some books on numismatics (the hobby of coin collecting). They will tell you how to identify the mint it is from and will give you an idea of value. If there is a numismatics club in your area, get in touch and they will help you out.
