I need to buy new tires for my car, a 98 Civic. The tires i have now are completely bald but i'm not too knowledgeable about cars and i don't know how to go about getting them (plus i don't want to get ripped off or coerced into buying something i don't need). Fisrt, if i go to a place like sears or firestone do i need an appointment (because i'd want them to install them too) or do i just show up? Also, what would a good tire be for driving in Houston? What are some reliable tires, etc? Basically, i'm completely clueless when it come to my car and need some feedback on tires.

Get a high mileage warranty on the tires........50,000 or more. Make sure to have them balanced and ask that the lug nuts be torqued on. No appointment needed, just show up. Tires for you Civic shouldn't cost much at all. You'll probably get by for a little more than $100.

Extremely cheap tires for sale are not a good idea. Tire failures at high speeds can cause some serious damage to your care and you. New cars usually come with tires that are rated way beyond the speeds you will be going. If your rarely get over 70 miles an hour on the interstate then you can get less expensive tires. Go to a reputable tire dealer and have him give you a good price on the exact tire you need. The more you wait the more the price will go up. Tires are made from oil. Anyhow you want good tires with good tread especially with winter approaching. There are lesser known brands that are good tires. Continental Tires are probably the best for the price.

Don't mess around when it comes to tires. Many companies make them, but few actually do the development necessary to improve a previous design.

Go to www.tirerack.com and enter in all the information about your car. There you will get a good idea who makes the best match for your car.

As a 35+ year mechanic, I will tell you that every vehicle I own runs on Bridgestone tires. You may have to go to a Firestone dealer to buy them, and they may be a bit more expensive than what you will find at a discount outlet, but I'm confident that you will be happy with the purchase as well as the longevity they provide.

I have always gotten incredible miles from Perrellei or Michelin. You will be replacing cheap tires in 15 to 20,000 miles. Tires are one of the most important parts of your car - bald tires are just plain dangerous. If you are a member at a Sam's or Costco they are inexpensive and reliable. You can check prices on the web for most of the major outlets. Be sure to price the total cost of installation for comparison - you will probably find that aspect to be the deciding factor.

Good luck - oh, check consumer reports on-line for tire recommendations.

get any brand that will fit your car from Sam's Club. You will save more money on the good quality tires from Sam's than you will spend on the membership. Plus you will get good road hazard waranty stuff with the tires.
