It depends on what kind of business. I know several business owners who never got a degree and they are very successful.

Most people will never ask you about your educational background. You need a business license to open a business. Depending on what type of business it is you may need other types of permits. You need to look into the laws in your state concerning the licenses, permits, and zoning laws. As far as for the schooling if you are doing something that is very technical then you may want to consider going to school. However some of the most successful entrepreneurs don't even have a high school diploma. Not to say that you shouldn't have it but some people do very well with very little education.

The beauty of it is that a lot of successful people do not have college degrees, a lot do but it is not a requirement. What you will need to do is find an area that you are interested in- like PIZZA. Instead of just starting a pizza business. I would "school" myself by working at a pizza shop, reading up about others who have done the same thing and then finding a mentor who can help you plan your business.

Good Luck!

I was really fortunate...I learned from my father. He ran a printing company from 1972 until he died in 1985. Years later, the things that he tought me (most of which I didn't realize at the time) really helped when I started my own companies.

He used to say he went to the "School of Hard Knocks", meaning he was self tought and learned a lot of lessons the hard way.

I have two pieces of advice:

1) By all means take some business school classes, but focus on fundamentals. You should understand basic accounting, tax law, regulations, etc. You need that background in order to have a conversation with independent business owners.

2) Talk to as many business owners as you can and find out how they did it. Understand their stories. Understand what they feel they did right, and what mistakes they made. Most business people love to talk about themselves and their companies, so they should be open to you.

Walk into most small businesses in your community and you'll find out that a HIGH percentage of them have little or no college.

They are entrepreneurs who learned through the school of life.

You'll find many with college degrees also. But the real requirements, DESIRE, WORK ETHIC, and STICK TO IT.

Will additional school help? Absolutely.

Depending on your city and the type of business, you may need a business license. Check with your city offices.

Fill a need in your community, or offer SUPERIOR value and service, and you'll be a great success.

Best Wishes, and welcome to the fun world of small business.. GO GET EM'.
