Tune the first string down and pluck both the first string and the third string until they sound the same, except the first string is an octave lower.

Drop the heaviest string a whole step down. To do this, make sure that the note on the heaviest strings 7th fret sounds like the 5th's string played open. They should sound exactly alike. Or you can buy a $10 tuner and make the bottom string a D.

lower the e string to D then you can play the bottom three strings as a open D chord
