If i had 5 different kinds of bushes i was using, would you recommend using a pattern or groups of bushes? Just to clarify this is going around the permiter of a picnic area. Also, would you plant each bush the same length apart, or measure so that when they're fully grown there will be equal space between them? (they grow to various sizes)

I did something similar to what you're wanting to do.

I used groups of bushes (use odd #'s in the group) but also did the groups in a pattern so that some of the same colors & textures were repeated throughout the area.'

Good luck with your landscaping!'

I would suggest using groups of bushes in some sort of pattern that is pleasing to your eye. While they are still in a container place them in the area in different ways to see what makes you feel good when you look at them. Make sure of the growing habit because that will determine the space needed in between when planting.

If you have the space, I would plant the large bushes in a line, then put the smaller bushes in between but slightly in front of the larger bushes. This would give it some depth visually, and minimize the up-down-up-down you'll have if you put them all in a row.

The spacing depends on your purpose - put them closer together if you are blocking a view, more space if it is just for eye candy.

Space between the different types of bushes. group the same types to form a hedge line after a few years of growth.
