This has happened a few times in the past 6 months. There is a history of colon cancer in my family. I am 39 years old. Is this something to be concerned or about or could it be just from straining during a BM?

I am an RN. Blood in the stool is always a concern, especially at your age and with your family history. If it is frank blood (bright red), it is most like from straining and irritating hemorrhoids. However; it may be cancer near the rectum. Since you have been experiencing blood in the stool for nearly six months, I would advise seeing a gastroenterologist. It is always best to be safe than sorry. If one does not take care of the situation, there is a possibility that the cancer may metastasize (break off and travel to another area). Go...no run...to make an appointment. Good luck.

Blood in your stool is most definitely not normal i would seek medical help right away.

While colorectal cancer often develops with no symptoms -- which is why screening for the disease is so crucial -- some symptoms can occur, particularly in the advanced stages of the disease, including:

Rectal bleeding
Blood in or on the stool (bright red)
Change in bowel habits
Stools that are narrower than usual
General stomach discomfort (bloating, fullness, and/or cramps)
Diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
Frequent gas pains
Weight loss for no apparent reason
Constant tiredness
Vomiting
If you have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, see your health care professional immediately. Though these symptoms may be caused by several other conditions, you need to be tested to find out why you have them.

Is the blood in your stool bright red, or dark almost brown in color? If its bright red, you have less to worry about. Bright red means its fresh blood. Dark blood is more serious, and more internal. Either way, check with your doctor.

You should first check to see if it isn't something like hemorrhoids. If not, you need to get a stool test kit from a doctor.
