i think this might help. because our coach says if we can run under 18 minutes, we can be all conference for cross country, so he just makes us run a six minute mile after practice every day. it basically just drills the pace in your head. if you do this, the sic minute mile pace is each lap: 136 132 128 124 (seconds) and if you say it's hard doing one six minute mile, then just run everyday. i run twice a day usually, like morning will be hard, and then the afternoon run will just be a nice 3 mile run. the more you run, the better you become.
Mile time 1st semester: 7:48.....Mile time 2nd semester: 5:30

You will need to run 2 different types of workouts:
1. You need to run distance to build up your endurance. Since you are aiming to race 3 miles, you should try to be able to run at least 6 miles comfortably.
2. You need to build up some speed. There are various speed workouts: interval training (200 on up intervals will help you), fartliks, hill training, etc.

Try to do about 2 speed workouts a week, 3 semi distance runs (probably about at least 30 minutes) and a long run of over 8 miles (not the day after a speed workout, you need to recover). I do not like the other suggustion of running a 6 minute mile every day. Each workout should have one specific goal, be it speed, endurance or recovery. If you are in high school, you could join your XC team, they probably do a similar workout pattern.

Good luck.
