Computers are tools. There are many uses.
I personally use mine totally for all my finances.
I am 100% using it (via QUICKEN) for billpaying, investing, etc).

I write at most 1-3 checks a year. And due to the computer quicken program have not had to 'hand-balance my chking acct in 7 years.
Yet I know at any second what my balance is.

I also use all the pc's in my home network for SETI/BOINC, and via BOINC also contribute to medical research.

Computers have been benefiting man since they were invented and the most notable is how early computer technology helped us fight & win WWII. Though not the only tool it was among the top 5 reasons we won.

In fact, if not for computers, we would likely be speaking german.

Remember, back then computers were still vacume tubes or semi-mechanical..

If they then had even had a Apple II, we probably could have won in half the time.

Even the Apple II was more power than all the computer power of all of WWII.

computers are not smart. So far there is no computer that shows its own true intelligence. But a programmer can use them for number crunching and to do what is called data mining if huge data warehouses to show trends that might otherwise be invisible or missed,

As for using it for the benefit of man I get the impression the only people even trying to get close to this are businesses that use data mining to help with business decision making.

Data is just that data. It's all open to user interpretation and manipulation. An analogy to that would be having all the ingredients for making a delicious meal. Some are talented enoight to be able to make a master piece while with others it's something not so good. Data is the same way, some use it for good (in medicine and healthcare) and others for evil (terrorists and hackers)
