Be careful of whatever you do, and make sure you arent doing anything with electricity. Open your current phone jack. See what kind of wire is connectiong to it (4 pair wire, 8 pair, etc). You will need to buy more of that same wire, connect it to the first jack with the current wires being used, and run it along the wall or through the wall to another room and put a jack (that you need to buy) on the end of the wire. Match up the wires from looking at the first jack when you count the wires.

The phone company runs another wire in your house if you have used up the 2 that comes with the house.
If you are just installing a jack to an existing phone line, then you just split it with a phone splitter box. You can find this at Home Depot.
Be very careful and do a clean job, otherwise if this is a voice or data phone, you will hear crackling or modem disconnections if the job is sloppy.

If you want to buy a wire and drill holes in the wall you simply go to Walmart electonics or hardware section and by the jack and wiring. Go to the box outside and attach to wires to the little screws just like your first phone and then run it around the house and through the wall to the back of the jack.
If I were you, though I would just buy a wireless jack. That is much easier. Just plug the main part into the phone jack your present phone is in and plug the other jack into an electrical outlet in whatever room you want it in.

If you chose to install it yourself, make a complete run from where the original wire from the phone company wire comes in to your new jack. Don't splice into an old jack because if the old wiring fails, you lose both phone jacks. Best bet is to find someone wires phones for a living, and still works on the side.

Find a local Radio Shack. Buy a splitter or splice the wire in the basement. Run the wire to the room and install a jack. It's only 2 wires.

pull a 4 wire phone line from where you want your new jack to the old one and piggy back the wires on top of the same color ones on the existing jack, it is an extension but not visible, you can also go to the exterior box with a new wire, niether of these will give you a second line just more jacks to the one line.

I know how to do the hook-up and wiring for an extension but it's difficult to explain to you on YA. I would need to know specifics and what exactly you're trying to do.
