It depends on where they work. Nursing home shifts are usually eight hours long, many hospitals have gone to twelve hour shifts. I know of one hospital that has their nurses work ten hour shifts, seven days on seven days off. Many nurses that work eight hour shifts sign up to work double shifts, so they work sixteen hours. Most states have laws that say nurses are not allowed to work more than sixteen hours straight, it is unsafe safe, and they must be off at least four hours before coming back to work. Of course all of the shifts are subject to overtime if there is more to do than can be done in the allotted hours, which is often the case.

At the hospital I work at, we do either 8 or 12 hour shifts. Sometimes we come in for 4 hours, and end up staying for longer. It varies among hospitals. The longest I have worked was 18 hours, and that was very unsafe because by hour 15 I was exhausted and more liable to make a mistake. Each state has its rules about nursing hours and requirements.
