I have done this to two honda civics its not that hard(crazy time consuming and a lot of bloody knuckles but not that difficult) but its easier to go to a junkyard and buy a manual parts car and then junk it after your done because youll need the tranny, clutch, master cylinder for the clutch, a crap load of bracketry, shift system, center console parts, the pedal system and more. Buying these parts seperate results in your checkbook crying and you having been able to buy a new car but picking up a junker that was rear ended or something will prolly only run you 500-1k.

edit: definately pick up a nice tool set with a bunch of extensions getting the tranny up onto the motor requires some contorsioning of the arms and tools. A set with a 3in and 6 or 8in extension with a swivel joint should do the trick. Before starting spend a week spraying the bolts that will be removed with pb blaster penetrating spray so that no bolts break. And remember patience over rush because you will forget something if you rush. Take time to label everything you take off! also definately buy the maintence book at the local autozone as it shows every part of the car fully dissassembled that way when it goes to mounting the brackets on your car your sure your putting them back on right!

to the comment below me: yes auto trans can be just as fast as stick trans with the right tuning but nothing beats having the control you want over your car. Especially with the new cars trans doing everything from braking your car to changing power control. If your looking for comfort auto all the way(i have an automatic 1969.5 ford maverick myself which runs pretty fast) but on my 04 ford focus stick is the only thing for me. i love having the control to shift down into the corner and pull through at a nice pace.

Swapping is a pain. You need a lot and a donor '95-'00 Neon (I think they are the same?) with a manual trans is the best bet.
You will AT LEAST need:
Manual transmission itself
clutch master cylinder
clutch pedal
brake pedal (the AT trans has a different brake pedal so it can clear the clutch pedal)
mounting brackets for pedals
ECU from manual trans car (has special sensors that are needed to operate such as the clutch pedal position sensor)
center console from manual car
shifter linkage
shift knob, boot
e-brake (the stock AT e-brake is goes through the transmission, so a different one is required)
that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I have a buddy who did this with his '99 Acura Integra and is was a pain, but cool once he was done.
good luck!

i have heard that a few very competent mechanics could change a manual into an automatic with much cost and changes in the car. I have never heard of anyone trying to change an automatic into a manual car.

Yes, is the short answer. And you're right, it can cost a bunch! Oh, and have fun with the 500 pound transmission, try not to drop it on yourself. It would probably be cheaper to sell your car & buy one with a manual transmission.

todays automatic trans. are just as good if not better than standards transm issions. It's not worth it but if you really want too get help from someone that knows what his doing because it is not easy and it's expencive.

GOOD LUCK!!

It is possible. You need to find a new/used clutch and manual transmission and someone who will help you.

It'll be better if you just buy a manual neon then.
