110/70 optimal
120/80 and below normal
120/80-139/89 prehypertension or slightly high
140/90-160/100 is phase 1 hypertension
before you check your blood pressure,
pee
sit up right
legs uncrossed
sit still 5 min
dont smoke or have coffee for 20-30 min prior
take 3 deep breaths before the test
remain still before the test. Take at albertsons or walgreens pharm.
159/75 is high. Its just the systolic or top number thats high. Usually they put you on meds if its above 140/90.However since just the top number is high they may recommend diet and exercise for 6 mths to lower it naturally. I would find out what his bmi is. to find out a normal weight for him. Just a weight loss of 10-20 pounds can naturallly lower his blood pressure.
Throw away the salt shaker. Avg person needs 2400 mg a day. Average person gets 6000mg a day. Look at any ingredients label. If sodium says 25%, just add a 0 on it. That means he is gettting 250 mg in that one serving. Fresh or frozen veggies are the best. Products like ms dash are awesome.
See a doctor in a clinic. An ER doctor would laugh unless you had symptoms of a heart attack/stroke.
this is a silent killer meaning you feel fine until something happens. If his cholesterol is high too they may go ahead and put him on meds.

Blood pressure isn't the end-all be-all indicator of health, but a high reading does send up certain red flags. At the age of 27, your boyfriend should not be having cardiovascular woes. One of the causes of a high B.P. is obstruction, and the heart simply pumps harder to compensate. This is probably not the case, but it can be quickly ruled out with a simple test.
Doctors aren't as prone to buy into the "White Coat" syndrome as they once were. The thought is that there could be other stressors in a day's time that are causing a similar reaction, but the b.p. is simply not being measured at the time.
Yahoo Answers may not be the best place in America for medical advice, but I'm sure everyone here will agree that Monday morning your boyfriend should be in his doctor's office, if only to rule out the possibility of a serious underlying condition.

Some people get "white coat hypertension", meaning that just going into a doctor's office or hospital raises their blood pressure. However, your boyfriend should continue to check his blood pressure once in a while (they have machines in some stores like Target and Walmart). If it continues to be high he should be treated. Doctors usually won't prescribe medicine until they see three high readings. I had one high reading in the doctor's office, then didn't need to go back to the doctor for about a year. In the meantime I was having terrible headaches. One evening I had a sharp pain in my head and went to the Urgent Care, and my blood pressure was around 200/110. I could have had a stroke. I fault my doctor for not telling me to follow up on that high reading I had in his office. He didn't seem concerned at all, probably because I was in my 30s.

No it isn't really bad, not bad enough to go to the hospital, but bad enough to make a trip to his doctors office on Monday. He might want to go to the drug store and use the blood pressure machines there tomorrow, They are not 100% accurate but give you a pretty good idea.

The 75 is great! But he is about 29 points above what is considered "high normal" on the higher figure. Suggest he consult his family physician.

talk to his doc, but alot of things can make a B/P high --- example pain can increase a B/P reading or nervousness. also there is something called white coat syndrome, where a persons B/P is higher at the doc or the hospitals
