I need to figure out what to do about my 6 year old. She's gotten sort of spoiled and I don't notice it until this one friend comes over. Her kids are so accepting of anything and mine always wants things a certain way. My kids are 6 and 3 and hers are 5 and 3. Mine only this color plate or she doesn't like what we're having for lunch. She likes to control the play and gets frustrated when the other kids don't want to play her way. My friend finally left because my daughter yelled at her daughter because she went the "wrong way" through a tunnel she made.

Any advice?

Well, sit down and think about what your goals are for your daughter. Do you just want certain actions, or is there a heart attitude you want her to have. Then help her to see that heart--maybe a thankful heart. Demonstrate and express thankfulness. Require it--if she isn't grateful for it, maybe she loses it.

You might find some situations where she can play with kids where she is clearly not in charge, not the oldest kid. Even better would be at someone else's place, so she is at their mercy for toys to be shared. Help her to understand what it is like to be not the alpha child, so to speak.

Kids come with different personalities, and birth order has a huge impact. First born girls tend to be bossy--our job as parents is to shape that into compassionate leadership skills. Good luck!

Ask your kids to explain to you why what they did was wrong. Don't let them play until they give you a satisfying answer.
