well im pretty sure the MLB looks down upon chew and is leaning towards gum and the players spit because when enough gum is in their mouths it causes excess saliva. This exces saliva is caused by an inherant behavior which is to salivate when something is placed in the mouth because saliva aids in digestion and your mouth cant tell the difference between double bubble and a piece of steak.
