Busy Busy Busy. You will find lots of movement here and there. People are changing wardrobe, getting makeup done, stage manager is hustling the most for sound checks and many other jobs. There are the curtain people and the lighting directors and the prop managers are getting and moving things to and from the stage. Some of the cast might be rehearsing their lines. You have to make sure the Mic's are working and the music is right and everyone gets to stage on cue. its even more complicated than that but i can't explain it all. Its a busy place!

You'll find love and romance if you play your cards right.
Mostly it depends on the show and theater. In fact, some theaters simply don't have a back stage!
Box sets and unit sets tend to be static and don't move so it's pretty quiet backstage, usually a props table and a costume rack and a couple of stagehands playing cards, maybe one assistant stage manager to call places.
Wing and Drop sets usually have multiple sets and so wagons roll on and off, sometimes the set even rotates on a huge turntable. Backstage is very busy and it's hard to get around, lot's of people quietly prepping the wagons, plugging in 'practicals' and dressing it all up. The size of the cast is larger too, often -- so it can get pretty nutty.
"Cue Lights" are often used to flash on for "stand by" and off for "go" go get entire groups of people moving at the same time.
Ballets are mostly just wings and drops. In the wings you'll see a lot of sweaty dancers huffing and puffing and cursing the altitude of the city they are playing and then looking fantastic on stage. They use everything for a "barre" including the ladders, booms and props tables.
Some of the bigger theaters might even have automated scenery that is a mechanical thing (like Miss Saigon) or tracks in the deck for pulling scenery -- the wings can have motors and gears and winches. Sometimes when doing shows with flying, stagehands are flying Peter Pan and watching the stage as they make her flip and sail out the window.
And there is an air of urgency and anticipation while ... you mostly are waiting. Waiting for your turn to "stand by ....and go".

What wouldn't you find.
Backstage is anotehr world. Stagehands ready to move sets, props, costumes, etc... Tech crew ready in case somethign goes wrong. Actors and Actress who arn't on stage waiting till needed. Sets, Costumes, Props, Storeage units.
The Stage Manager is there with a headset and clipboard, ready for anything.
There will also be archives, workshops, storages rooms, dressing rooms, and anything else needed for a show or stage production.
Backstage is anything not open to or seen the general public in a theater, so the entire building is backstage. Reheral rooms, offices, and the such may not be in use, but they are there as well.

It depends on the play and the company.
Generally you'll find a rack of costumes on both sides of the stage, prop table on both sides of the stage, at least one stage manager, at least two costume mistresses or misters, actors waiting for their cues, prop and set crew to make sure that everything is in it's place at the right time, etc.
That's pretty basic.
