Motorcycle, you learn more about 'lines' and balance. It will make you a better car driver as well as you become more aware of whats going on around you. 4 wheelers are generally for people who cant ride bikes, they take up more space and mess up trails for people who can ride.

A motorcycle. More versatile and practical. It'll go anywhere a 4 wheeler will go and then some, plus on the road.

I assume you are talking about off-road riding. As others have mentioned a motorcycle requires more skill to ride off-road. A motorcycle can also go places that a quad (4-wheeler) cannot. Many of the trails that I enjoy riding are true singletrack. A quad would not fit.

Quads are popular because they are easier to ride off-road, especially at slow speeds. It is more difficult to ride a motorcycle at slow speeds. This makes quad riders think that they are riding a safer off-road vehicle. However, at faster speeds a motorcycle becomes more stable, while a quad becomes less stable. Especially while going over roots, rocks and ruts. I have seen quad riders become seriously injured when, during a failed hill-climb attempt, their 400+ pound quad flipped over on top of them.

I had the same dilemma but chances are you will get more use out of a motorcycle. Even if you have lots of open space to ride a quad - you generally can't take it to run errands or do anything practical and so you probably won't ride it as much as you think. I ended up getting a dual sport motorcycle (Kawasaki KLR650) so I can enjoy it in day to day life taking it to work, etc but also take it offroad occasionally.
It's also great having a back up method of transportation when my car has to be in the shop now and then.
