I don't know anything about soccer!!!! I've never played a day in my life. I was given a dvd, a pamplet for couches, and a list of the contacts of everyone on my team. So what now? What do I do? What are my responsibilities as a couch? Any advice on how to at least half way look like I know what I am doing even though I haven't the slightest clue?

No worries oh Optimystical One. I used to be a soccer coach, and refereed and played for a combined 16 years (from the time I was 6 until I turned 22). I also coached a few seasons when I was in my mid thirties.
You don't have to know a lot as opposed to running drills to create speed and agility. The DVD and pamphlet will explain that "fun" stuff. As Coach, you do a lot of the organizing too, and that means rounding up other parents with mini vans to do driving to away games if you have any.
I can easily teach you stuff like wall passing (even though it's in the DVD and manual) and offsides if applicable in your league.
Just shoot me a note if you need any help and I'll be sure you get the basics and the nuances.
What did you get yourself into? Being a wonderful and caring mom that is willing to share that love with others. Tricked, yep, you sure were; in the end, you'll be exhausted and glad you did this for a season. It's a wild ride and all I can hope for you is that the kid's parents are sane. It's rarely the kids that are the problem! Yet I can tell you some funny stories about parents coming to me telling them I was ruining their child's chance for a scholarship in an eight to nine year old league!
Good luck and thank you for giving a rip about kids; you ROCK!

Well if you just want to learn and play some pick up games and maybe a little league games its not going to be terribly difficult, but if your aiming to get drafted by a real team no chance. my first suggestion would be to hire a real trainer to give you 1 on 1 instruction, but this is expensive and i remember my parents payed about 50-60 dollars for it for about an hour. If you don't want to do that then I suggest using the internet to google how to do some basic moves and skills. Soccer is fundamentally about speed, stamina, ball control, and strength on the ball. You will need to train your body as well as hone your skills. Some very basic things you can do are called box drills ( where you pass to yourself without moving forward forward or backwards using just the insides of your feet, the trick is to almost run in place while tapping the ball back and forward), next would be toe taps ( this is kind of like high stepping on the ball u keep one foot planted and the other is raised and touching the top of the ball), another basic skill is to juggle with BOTH feet, you should also practice dribbling with the inside and outside of both feet and getting used to how it feels, after you get a feel for those things, you can work on cuts and moves. I will say the best simple move is known as cutting the ball it will fake out anyone if you work on it. My advise is to search for soccer videos on youtube, and watch what some of those kids can do, and look these things up on the internet, or ask kids who have been playing soccer for years on a club team//high school team to help you out. Its a very hard thing for me to explain on the internet.

Immediately contact the head coach of the league and tell him/her that you are unable, not unwilling, to do this job. Tell the head coach that you would be willing to be an assistant coach or a parent advisor so that you can learn more about the game and more about coaching. Just be honest and tell them that you jumped into this with great enthusiasm without really knowing what the job entailed and that you don't have any experience at all.

Relax! I don't think couches actually do much. Different story if you were the coach though. Then you'd be screwed.

when i was young i used to play football in the house with a tennis ball, which helped me a lot to play good football with a real ball. I sugest to use them time to time to play with a smaller ball, it will be a lot easier with a real one later. good luck and think they will never find out that you don't know football better than them! :)

Is this because everybody sits on you?
