Vietnam is usually hot and humid (80 to 90 F), with more rain from June to September, so my recommendation is to wear light and bright. If you plan to ride a bike or motorcycle there, it is a great idea to bring raincoat with you. If not, an umbrella is also recommended. However, you shouldn't have to carry these (raincoat or umbrella) with you; many are available there, either from the hotels' concierge or much cheaper to buy, use, and throw away after your visit.
If you would like to stay long there, there are many good/cheap laundry service in the major cities that you don't need to bring too much clothing either. In the last trip, I brought enough clothing for one-week stay and paid around $10 to $20 for laundry for all these per week. Don't use the laundry services in the 5-star hotels, those would definitely cost more :-).

There are two kinds of weather in Vietnam- hot and dry and hot and wet.
This means two things- wear something breathable and something that drys quickly or something that is water friendly. Frankly, when I visit Vietnam and it rains- I simply resign myself to getting wet.
This means I wear water sandles most of the time- my favorite is a pair of sandals from birkenstocks- these will be good any where in the tropics, really.
Forget the umbrella- you will get wet. Forget the raincoat- you will die from the heat- have shampoo or soap with you at all times and you can enjoy a free shower thanks to mother nature. LOL
Safe travels

In September, it starts to rain. In places like Hue, it will still be warm, but not hot like August. Towards the end of August and the beginning of September, the weather turns cool and rains a lot, but some days, it can get very hot. However, cities like Da Lat, Da Noi and Ho Chi Minh will be a lot cooler than Hue. I suggest wearing comfortable t-shirts and pants or shorts. Even though it may rain, it will not get cold. The most you might need is a light jacket.

I was there in the mid October. Bring shorts. I was so hot, but make sure that you bring some light pants also because its disrespectful to go certain places in shorts. Also don't bring anything really light in color. When you ride on the back of the motorbikes everything gets dirty. Bring some of those face wipes (even if you are a boy) The kind that are already wet. Everyone used mine when we went on tours on the motorbikes. The wipes would be black after we used them. Have fun, I am so jealous!

Hello! I live in Vietnam. If you want to travel there, remember to bring an umbrella because it usually rains in September.

many times.. getting cooler in most places and starting to rain once in a while ..but you can get anything you need very cheaply in viet nam so i recommend traveling light from home.. anyway dressing warm in viet nam usually means putting on 2 shirts so i wouldnt be too concerned . ps ..yes shorts are certainly comfortable but often [ not always] inappropriate, as are tank tops..that said , the viet namese are used to seeing westerners act inappropriate..
.edit: if you think it it's hot in september, dont be there in june! and dont listen to our vietnamese friends here, LOL, they hate all weather! lol, "too cold" [ 65- degrees hats and scarfs, lol], [80 degrees- "too hot to go to the beach..."[i swear someone told me that... then they proceeded to put on a long sleeve shirt over a"t"shirt & long trousers, then follow me down to the shore and stand under a palm tree[ ALWAYS too sunny] while i went swimming... , crack me up ! more concernernd w/ edequite than comfort... gotta love 'em lol, but they are nuts when it comes to weather... lol... oh yeah rubber sandels, get them over there, comfortable and great for all occations!
