One reason is that German cars (BMW, Mercedes and Audi) are not sold into fleets, especially rental car companies. Those fleets are turned over approx. every 2-3 years, so when rental car companies offer for sale hundreds of thousands of cars on the market each year, it puts a cap on the resale value of those cars. Ford, GM, Chrysler, Japanese and Korean cars are depressed in resale price because of the fleets being disposed of.
Keeping the supply of used cars limited allows the resale price to be kept high, and so the initial price can also be higher.
Another factor is that German manufacturer tend to put more expensive technology (dual overhead cams, variable valve timing, Tiptronic transmissions, power/heated & cooled seats, multi-link suspension systems, stability control, etc. etc.) into the cars that they sell in the US. They offer other, less-equipped models in Europe but have no intention of selling them in the US.

It's all about supply and demand baby.......they can only charge for what people are willing to pay.....they've got to sales cars...so consumers are willing to pay more for the German reputation of building a quality car. Coincidentally, Dodge-Chrysler is owned by Daimler/Benz....which is the parent company of Mercedes Benz....so cars like the Chrylser Le Baron, Pt Cruisers, Dodge Charger are built at least partially with an integration of German and American Technology.

individually, i think of German automobiles are as stable as jap automobiles. German automobiles tend to be over engineered and effective with in elementary terms minor themes giving them a foul call. in addition they save going if there is something incorrect with them to get you residing house/storage jointly as a jap vehicle might basically refuse to run.Granted, a number of them did have problems with them whilst leaving the production facility such using fact the cord rot on the previous c type Mercedes Benz 1994-2000 i think of, yet do your study until now buying. Servicing is the main ingredient with German automobiles and using sturdy high quality mid selection oils and issues. I easily have individually owned 4 BMW's, 2 Audi's and a million Mercedes.

They only seem overpriced if you're looking at the initial purchase price.
I have a 2003 BMW 530i. In 2003, Consumer Reports rated it, "the finest car we have ever tested." That's a fact, not my opinion.
Quality is worth the extra money.

German cars are not really overpriced. They are priced quite reasonably. Why? Because their cars have been made with superior car-manufacturing technology and top-notch quality.

Because they convinced American yuppies that they are the car to have. They are pieces of junk. How many old ones have you seen. The electronic parts, starters, alternators, window motors are all badly made.
German technology = cars.
Jap technology = Televisions
American Technology = Polio vaccine, men to the moon and back. Foreign aid.
Do the math.

Because most American car shoppers are dumb and don't understand resale value and depreciation. You dangle a $5,000 rebate in front of their face and they jump at it like Burger King.
Buy a $30,000 U.S. car and a $40,000 German car. U.S. buyer got the better deal, right?! After 5 years, the U.S. car is worth $12,000 and the German car is worth $25,000.
DOH!!!
Do the bloody math.

Because it is expensive to import them, and German cars are better than American or Japanese cars. BMW and Mercedes-Benz in particular.

They're foreign cars! Go to Germany if you want to buy them cheaper. Also a dollar over there is equal to around $1.30 here. So things are more expensive in Germany.
