MIRROR IMAGE

I don’t want to be like him
I’m scared I will
I’m scared of what I will do if I do the same as him
Am I going to be the same?
Like looking into a mirror
A reflection of evil
Or will the reflection be good
I can’t be like him
It’s not fair
I hate what he is
What he has done
Am I going to be the same?
He raises his hand
Does the reflection do the same?
Or is the reflection going to be different
I hope
I pray
That it’s going to be different

Books of contributed poetry are published all the time, and while you'll receive little - or nothing - by the way of royalties, it's quite an open market.

Just do a search for publishers on the net, and e-mail the relevant department a couple of choice samples. And if you're really serious, look for writing groups/forums online, or live groups in your area.

Oh, and don't stop writing. You're only as good as your last poem.

I think it is very difficult to get poetry published these days. Poetry is not very marketable, and the irony is, that usually, only the poet themselves, see the true value in their works. Poetry is deeply personal and most often emotional. The inspiration of poetry is an internal resource, perhaps a gift to express oneself during high emotion. Saddness, loneliness, anger, passion, love or joy. Many poets do self-publishing on a small and personal scale in order to get it in a book form. Otherwize, I say keep writing, keep feeling and expressing yourself even if you never get it published or even gain the attention of the literary world. Writing poetry serves well its personal purpose.

You have to submit them to as many magazines (that publish poems) as possible. Only when you have had quite a lot published in this way is there much hope of a book publisher taking them. Also I think publishing poetry is very much a "who you know" field so you need to get to know as many poetry publishing people as you can and smarm up to them like mad. Also you need to write much better poems than the one you showed with this question. Why not take up another hobby?

I don't want to sound harsh but what you wrote isn't really poetry - more a series of statements and questions, that could barely be called prose. There is no poetic imagery except for -'like looking into a mirror', it doesn't scan, there is no rhythm. Can't really say any more.

I would start by getting an article in your local newspaper. If somebody sees it and likes it, they'll give you a writing gig.
