I use visualization to prepare. Before I go out, I close my eyes and mentally run through the performance. I picture singing the song perfectly, or running my lines with no mistakes, and I imagine the audience responding in the best way possible (like laughing at the funny lines or applauding wildly). Because I have imagined it, it seems as if I already performed and it gives me confidence.

I also take a few deep, calming breaths, and smile into a mirror. It is proven that when you smile, your brain can be tricked into to feeling happy, even if you aren't.

The best way to stay calm is to be prepared. Know your lines backward and forwards, your dance moves, your music...depends on what it is, but the more prepared you are, the calmer you will be.

Last, remember that most performances are supposed to be FUN. Fun for you, and fun for the audience. Even if you mess up, they will still support you. They are rooting for you!

One other note, if you are performing on a stage with a dark house and stage lights, you will not be able to see the audience, maybe just a little of the front row. This helps a lot.

Break a leg!

When I have to speak in front of more than 10 people I slip into a trance of shock. Last Tuesday night I had to speak in front of about 150 and the trance was surely there. Breathing deeply can help some and having what you're performing written on paper or on a teleprompter is a big help. I was reading mine but I still felt disconnected. I think it's my brain's way of coping with stage fright. Good Luck!

Concentrate on the job in hand. Who are you? Where have you come from and how do you feel about it? Get yourself into the correct emotional state to enter the scene by deciding what you want from the other person. Or what you want to do to them. What is the place you are walking into? How well do you know it? What do you expect to be there? What actually happens in the scene? Then relate to the actors onstage by opening up to them fully and in character. The audience will disappear as long as you disappear into your work.

You are either a natural at this, or you can be taught to deal with it, or you just run.

I once stood naked for 3 hours in an art gallery in Leeds, UK, as the Artist said she wanted "live sculptures of humans to compare with the sculptures she was exhibiting". It did not bother me one bit. Funnily enough, at the end of the day, myself and the other nudes who had stood were invited to the gallery bar for a drink, and none of us bothered to get dressed.

Draw your own conclusions.

Remember that you wouldn't have been asked to do it in the first palce if you wasn't good. So just do your thing and dont think about the number of people, they are there to enjoy the preformance not eat you up! YOU WILL BE FINE. Good luck.

Being nervous before a gig, is what gets the adrenaline going to give you the "gig buzz". It also serves to give you that edge, that makes you perform that little bit better.

If you're well rehearsed and know exactly what you're doing, there should be no need for calm, just go out there and enjoy!

Read a book by George Bush. He should have great hints on how to make great speeches. That should inspire you.
