And do you think Acer is a better brand then Toshiba or HP?
I would like to get one with a DVD Rom on it and wireless networking.

I used an Acer last year and even though I'd never heard of that brand it proved to be a really great laptop. I used it as part of campus program where they gave selected students ones to use for class, so I'm not sure what the cost of them run. As for a Toshiba, I have a friend who has one and has had to put in almost as much as she spent on it in repairs. Not a good sign, considering it's only a couple years old. HP usually seems to be a solid brand and a decent value for what you get. Despite the massive battery recall from Dell, I'd also say that would be a good brand to look into. All the Dell products I've owned have been good and lasted well beyond others, plus they have a good reputation for customer service. Whatever you do, though, do not buy anything by eMachines! Everything I have from that company has been crap and has had to be replaced way before it's time!

OK, you like Acer. But I prefer Toshiba. When I am in a hurry, I'll grab an HP. I really do not have any experience with ACER, but if I really wanted to know, I would look at the ratings at http://www.newegg.com

In general, I think that laptops should be bought from a store that have a good return policy. It is bogus when they want to charge a restocking fee, or say that they are willing to FIX a broken one. If it arrives DEAD, I just want to RETURN IT.

The advantage of looking at a store, is that you can see EXACTLY what you are buying.

So I recommend that you look at the Toshiba and the Acer at a local STAPLES store. They have HPs also. Again, STAPLES has a "No Questions" return policy. Costco is also awesome with returns, but they only have HP and Toshiba.

You see, here are the trade-offs:
Light weight - small keyboard and screen
Huge Screen, large keyboard - HEAVY.

OH, another thing. Unless you really HAVE TO HAVE a laptop, consider getting a desktop. While not portable, they are cheaper, cheaper to upgrade, cheaper to repair and can accept many more TOYS to plug in.

Good luck

I repair computers and we have lots of computers at home.

My wife's HP laptop is easily the most reliable machine I have ever seen. I would not buy anything else.
