KHONDAB, Iran - Iran's hard-line president on Saturday inaugurated a heavy-water production plant, a facility the West fears will be used to develop a nuclear bomb, as Tehran remained defiant ahead of a U.N. deadline that could lead to sanctions. The U.N. has called on Tehran to stop the separate process of uranium enrichment — which also can be used to create nuclear weapons — by Thursday or face economic and political sanctions

what do they mean by this

They mean they are mocking at the so-called powers of the world. It means they now know that no one in the world is willing to take a serious measure against them. It means they know US is alone.
It means they are joyful they have bought Russians, Chinese, French and Italians. It means a big alas for the desperate nation of Iran.

Iran is challenging the United States and the United Nations, because they are now surrounded by U.S. invaded nations (Iraq and Afghanistan). They feel threatened, so they are doing some sabre rattling of their own to show the world that they're not intimidated. It's pretty understandable really, any country that felt threatened would do the same.
Sanctions are the elimination or discontinuation of trade with a nation in the attempt to squeeze them out of their bargaining position. That is what we are threatening if they continue their insistence on uranium enrichment, which will lead to nuclear self-protection. It's a huge mess, a mess we should have thought about before we illegally and immorally invaded Iraq!

It means this is the same basic thing that North Korea has been doing since the 50's. It also means the the U.N. is reacting in exactly the same way.

They start enrichment programs, the UN slaps them on the wrist. They throw a fit and wont let the UN in to monitor their efforts, so the UN tells them theyre not going to hear their political stories any more.

and then 50 years down the line we've got some crazy dictator threatening to blow up nukes to get some attention.

Its not good, but its not armegeddon either.

It means the world will do nothing while Iran develops an arsenal of nuclear weapons. When Tel Aviv gets wiped off the map the muslim world will celebrate and the west will impose more "sanctions" which have never ever deterred anybody from anything.

It means that Iran's first nuclear electric power plant went online today.

Lots people think it implies other things, like Iran is developing nuclear weapons technology. They may be right, but that's not what the news report says.

I hope the Israelis take out this reactor as they did Saddam Hussein's one at Osirak. If anybody can do it then it has to be the Israelis. Does anyone remember how they rescued the hostages at Entebbe from that ape Idi Amin?
The U.N. is highly politicized and corrupt; after all's said and done, it is just a toothless dog.

It means that the US now has an excuse to go to war with Iran. Of course, they would have gone to war anyway, even without a reason, like they did in Iraq.

All I can say is I hope the liberals go over there and stand infront of their nuclear facility to protect it.
