Yes, from there and now married to a beautiful English Rose. Had our 3rd wedding ceremony and honeymoon in Cape Town. Spent 5 weeks over there.Betty's Bay is beautiful as well as the Garden Route is good to travel. BUT DON'T use SAA to fly as their whole service and attitude to us was a huge failure.
Although please go and visit the Wine Route and climb Table Mountain or take a ride in the cable car. The best time to go is when it is winter over here IE November through to April as the weather would be good. You could also buy some good quality clothing as it is cheap. Enjoy it

I have only been to Cape Town and that was splendid. It's a mixture of Europe, Africa and Asia all in one. Very distinctive with its own unique varieties of things, lovely to look at and explore, and the people are very friendly. It's also a lot safer than other cities in South Africa. I also took the train down to Simonstaat to see the penguins on Bolders Beach. This too was a charming seaport and fishing village. A lot of places in the Western Cape and along the Garden Route are lovely.

From what I have read about other places; Durban is quite colourful because of its Indian population. Johannesburg is a kinetic metropolis (but beware of crime) and Pretoria has some nice surprises. In these places though, it might be better to have a guide accompany you.

depends what you are after. cape town is probably the most popular with tourists, but many s.a's travel to the east coast for their holidays. lived inkwazulu-natal , up until 2 years ago. it is beautiful and has, both lovely coastal regions and the drakensburg, if you want the most scenic mountains and country living. have to go to Durban(which has some eyesores, but worth it) it has some of the world's largest shopping centres, many outdoor activities , including waterworld, flea markets and Shakaland. december is a busy time on the coast ,so going another time of the year is fine as the weather does not get too cold and it will save you money as prices do go up in the high season. if there have a bunny chow (Indian meal)

South Africa is a shortened version of the splendid call, 'The Union of South Africa'. In 1910 the Union of South Africa grew to become into created by using the unification of four factors, by using growing to be to be a member of the two former self sustaining Boer republics of the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) and the Orange loose State (Oranje Vrystaat) with the British ruled Cape Province and Natal. maximum heavily, the hot Union of South Africa gained international appreciate with British Dominion status putting it on par with 3 different important British dominions and allies: Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Hi! I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I honestly think it's the most beautiful city in the world! Cape Town was voted 6th best city in the world amogst the readers of the world's leading Travel Magazine - Travel and Leisure... relegated Singapore, Hong Kong, NY, San Francisco etc. It will be an experience of a lifetime. It's also a very friendly city... and diverse! Go to http://www.capespirit.com/35.html for photos of Cape Town. Someone mentioned the Crime Expo website. It's propaganda and can't be taken seriously. I started a website www.truecrimexpo.co.za that'll show you that Crime Expo SA does not expose the truth. I stongly recommend SA as a travel destination!!

I've spent 5 years there.Travelling every 3 months to renew my visa. Cape Town is noted for raising its prices during the main holiday season. Overall I would say worth a visit but overpriced.
My favourite spot would have to be Buccanneers backpackers at Cintza West. (Wild Coast just north of East London.)They have a range of cottages with 2 double rooms in each shared kitchen/ lounge and bathroom. These are set on a hill overlooking a lagoon with a white sandy beach. There's a bar at the top and a swimming pool at the bottom of hill. By walking across the beach you can reach Cintza East where Michaela's restaurant is situated at the top of a huge dune surrounded by trees. It is reached by a funicular lift and the food is excellent and there's a pretty good view as well. The restaurant is not cheap but well worth the indulgence. If you are travelling on the cheap there are a range of backpackers spread around the country and a Minibus service connecting them (Baz Bus) Much more enjoyable sharing a hire car as sometimes (often) once you arrive at backpackers you are a captive market. Baz bus is good for meeting people as distances are long but then so are backpackers. SA is big so allow 2-3 days CPT to Durbs say slightly less CPT Joburg and 5-6 hrs JoBurg to Durbs. Bear in mind petrol stations do not accept credit cards. Melville is a fun place in Jo Burg but really you need to have friends there as no backpackers nearby and easy to get lost in. Quite a relaxed bohemian feel which is a wonderful change compared to the endless franchised eateries prevalent in SA. Its easy to forget where you are once in a shopping mall as they are all the same extremely boring. The signage in most of SA is pretty poor. The drive along Chapman's peak is stunning but you have to pay a toll to use it. If you want to feed elephants you can do so just north of Knysna. I'm afraid I forget the name of the reserve but tourist info in Knysna can help. Knysna very pleasant but rapidly becoming a victim of its own success. From Knysna you can take a steam train, go horseriding take a boat trip etc but very small town so you'll be glad to leave after 2-3 days.
If you have time and money try and go up to Swaziland (Swaziland Backpackers) near Manzini. Its a great contrast compared to SA much smaller and quite a variety of things to do like safaris and hotsprings. Cheaper than SA much more relaxed.
Crime is bad if you are stupid so don't walk around with a camera dangling from your neck and I would recommend leaving jewellery at home. Most crime eg rape and murder happens in the townships which doesn't mean outside these areas is safe just don't get too freaked by the figures which are astounding.
Enjoy your stay. Avoid boerewors inedible SA sausage they all swear by. Can't beat a British banger.
PS Avoid Port Elizabeth unless you have a penchant for windy weather. Unavoidable stop for Baz Bus travellers. If staying over night stay at Lungile Backpackers. One final thing a surcharge applies to hire cars booked at airports (around about 9 %). Apart from taxis no public transport so you don't have a great deal of choice if you are not being met.
