For most MMORPGs, the only way to make money is sell items and/or your character.

Some of the companies "crack down" on this sort of thing, or only permit it through the established store they've created. (SOE has its own character exchange for EQ2, for example.)

There are also folks (often overseas in Korea and China) who "farm" for money in-game, then sell it to people. The MMO companies hate this sort of thing, because it usually disrupts the in-game behavior of the normal players.

You can actually make a living in Second Life, however, because it has its own virtual economy that is matched to the US dollar. (Right now I think it's 3.73 Linden dollars = 1 US dollar.)

You are allowed to 'swap' out a certain number of Lindens each month, thus converting back to real currency.

It does take work as well as the ability to conceive and then market a desirable product, but if you are artistic enough or know enough about programming to make "workable" objects or effects that people want, you can set up a store and maybe start selling enough to make a small steady income.

People also sell services in SL. The most obvious is the "sex trade" unfortunately (there's always money there), but there are musicians, wedding planners, therapists, and others who charge a fee and interact/perform in-world.

A few people have hit it big and were able to support themselves for awhile on their income. That's a pretty neat concept. SL is probably one of the best, if you hope to bring in steady money.

If you make a maxed out character, you can sell your account for cash on ebay, etc. It would most likely not be able to support you though...
