The phrase can have two meanings.
1.
It means that one way to know that someone is really a true friend is when they come to you in their time of need. It means that they trust you with their secrets, know you will not judge them for their problems or their inablitity to solve them on their own. That friend knows they can call on you in an emergency. In helping them, your "deeds" are proof of your friendship.
For example, if I'm home alone and accidentally cut my hand while cooking, I would need a good friend I could call to drive me to the emergency room. If I choose you, then I am a friend in need who really needs you to be my friend right now.
2.
It means someone who only communicates with you when they need something from you. They call you a friend, but outside of your repeatedly rescuing them, there is nothing more to the relationship. You don't talk or see each other unless it's to solve his or her problem.

You are looking at it from the wrong side of the equation.
It stems from the fact that if a person (say for example you) are in need, and another person, your friend stepped up and helped you with that need, it is not without cost to him/her. Sometimes it is a very dear cost. If the friend helps, without conditions or strings attached, he is indeed a friend, because he has contributed to your well-being and has no means of demanding payment.

A friend in need:
When you are in need. When you need help, when you are unable to give any repayment. When you are broke and everyone hates you.
Is a friend indeed.
If your friend stays by you when you are in need, that is a true friend, a "friend indeed".
If your friends only stay by you when you are rich and popular, they are not real friends.

Means that they will be a friend only as long as they are in need. Sucking up to you and will do anything for you because you have what they need. When u have nothing else to give then they will be ur friend no more. These friends are actually suckers, leeches, parasite.

You can have friends who are with you during good times, but the ones who stick with you, when you face tough times, at times when you truly need them, are the ones that are indeed your friends.

What it means is that when a "friend" needs something, they will be your best friend. But if they don't need anything, they aren't really there. Another word for it is "fairweather friend."

The meaning rests on the word "indeed" not "in deed". It suggests humorously that if someone has a need, then certainly they will see themselves as your "friend".

Just means they are only a friend when they are in need.
A freind in need. This is a person that is in need of something be it money or other. You never see this person unless they are in need. So when they have a need you are their best of best freinds. They will help you with anything to get what they need.
So if you are in need who is your best freind? The person that can take care of your needs.
To me it just means that someone is bumming off you till they no longer need you. So They are only a freind when in need.
