We go on a "Father-Daughter" camping trip every year with some people from our town. When my sister and I were younger, my dad made up a story for us. It's a bit gory, but not overly gross- I wouldn't recommend telling it to kids who aren't over 8 or 9...it would just freak them out if they haven't been exposed to ghost stories. Also, before the story, you need to take a hatchet (meant for pounding tent stakes into the ground), or something like it, and cover it with ketchup, maybe mixed with a little water so it looks like blood. One time, one of the girls who was 11 or so, was like, hey, that's not blood and took a lick of it!! The perfect age to tell this story is from ages about 7 or 8 to age 11 or so. Anyway, here it goes. There was a guy, named Jim Beam (yes, from the liquor, though we didn't know it at the time!). He was put in [the ______ (whatever state you are camping in)] prison for [insert something here, like if it's a younger audience you might say stealing, if it's older, you might say mass murder]. One [something that describes the night you are in now, like moonless, or full moon, or almost full moon, etc.] night about 5 years ago, Jim broke out of prison, and every [moonless, full moon, almost full moon, etc.] night since then, he has come in to [the state and campground you're in] and every morning, someone is missing. A bloody hatchet is always found around the place that someone is missing. [Depending how old the audience is, this might not be scary enough, so you can add in that he takes someone (like if the audience is mostly all girls or boys, you say something that applies to the majority of the audience) that is a girl/boy, etc.]. Then, you pretend to notice that for the first time, that the night you're telling this on is moonless, full moon, etc., whatever time you chose. At this point, you say something about everyone being careful tonight...and don't go anywhere alone. You subtly get the audience to go look for the hatchet (saying, we might need to check out our area so it's safe before we go to bed). Before the story begun, you threw the hatchet in a place that was visible, but not just sitting there (half under a bush or something is good). Eventually, the kids will find it, and hopefully get all scared! You might want to let someone that's older in the audience (maybe a 12 or 13 year old, so they won't spill the secret) know about the story, since they'll be more doubtful of the story anyway, and when it comes time to look for the hatchet, they can "believe" the story and lead the kids along, towards where the hatchet is. Depending on the ages of the audience, you might need to tweak the story a little, so it's not as scary, or scarier. Have fun camping!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
The Premature Burial by Edgar Allen Poe
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
BLOODY MARY!!
Urban Legend: Chanting "Bloody Mary!" thirteen times in front of a candlelit mirror in an otherwise dark room will summon her vengeful spirit.
The Story: Go into a room with a mirror and turn all the lights off. Bathrooms seem to be perfect for this since they almost always have a mirror and are usually dark at night with the lights off and the door closed. Light a candle, look into the mirror, start chanting "Bloody Mary" . You have to do this 13 times, of course. You should see Bloody Mary behind your left shoulder after the thirteenth time.
Beware, she has been reported to 1.) Kill the person calling her, 2.) Scratch their eyes out, 3.) Drive the person mad or 4.) pull the person into the mirror with her. This is an old legend, it has been around for ages. A folklorist, Janet Langlois, published an essay on the legend back in 1978. At that time, the legend was wide spread across the USA and a popular slumber party ritual done by girls as well as boys. No one knows the true origins of the Bloody Mary tale, she's been known to be anything from a witch that was killed for practicing witchcraft to a modern day woman killed in a car crash, depending on what part of the country you live in. It was made popular again in the film Urban Legends in 1999.
Lake Monsters
Find a dark, over grown lake and you'll find a story of a lake monster. Here are some of the nore well known creatures.
Champie
Champie is the name of the lake monster that inhabits Lake Champlain on the Vermont/Quebec/New York boarder. Champie is usually described as having a long neck and a flat head. Some descriptions have Champie with a thin body, others say it is more rounded. It is described as being anywhere from 10 to 30 feet long. It has been sighted since the 1600s. Photographs of Champie do exist, which may or may not be hoaxes. Some feel that Champie is a surviving prehistoric plesiosaur.
The Loch Ness Monster
The Loch Ness Monster or "Nessie" is the name of the lake monster that inhabits Loch Ness in Scotland. Loch Ness is about 24 miles long, fairly narrow, and about 800 feet deep. Loch Ness connects to the North Sea by the Caledonian Canal. The water is very murky because of a high concentration of peat.
Nessie is usually described as having a long neck, with a wide body. It is about 40 feet in length. This description seems to suggest a prehistoric plesiosaur reptile type creature. Sonar used in 1972 and 1975 by Dr. Robert H. Rines of the Academy of applied science in Boston came up with what looked like the fin of a plesiosaur.
Nessie sightings have been reported as early as the 6th century with more recent sightings begining in the 1930's. In 1933 Mr. and Mrs. John MacKay saw "an enormous animal rolling and plunging in the waters". Also in 1933 Mr. and Mrs. George Spicer reported seeing a creature out of the water which resembled a "prehistoric animal".
Many of the sightings have been recorded in the deep waters of Urquart Bay. The most famous picture of Nessie hs the 13th century Urquart Castle in the forground. Well over 3,000 people have reported seeing the monster since 1933, including police officers, scientists, local residents and tourists.
Despite all the sightings and the few photos, no hard evidense to totally prove Nessies existance have been found.
Ogopogo
Ogopogo is the name of the lake monster that inhabits Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. The monster is somewhat eel-like in appearance with a flatter head. It is from 15 to 20 feet in length. It has been reported since at least the early 1900s. It may have been sighted by precolonial Indians who described "the N'haaitk" in the lake. There are inconclusive photos of the creature. The creature has been reported by a great many people. Some hypothesize the Ogopogo may be a surviving prehistoric plesiosaur.
Slimy Slim
The Slimy Slim is the name of the lake monster that inhabited Payette Lake in Idaho. The monster is usually described as having a long neck with a flatter head. Slimy Slim was sighted mostly in the 1930s, and has not been reported in the past 50 years. A very large crocodile was also reported in Payette Lake in the 1930s, which may have been the real Slimy Slim.

My dad used to tell us a story called 'Johnny and the Liver' that was short, hair-raising and not at all gory. It included a poor mom, a 12 year old boy, a cemetary and a mysterious stranger who may/may not be the Devil.
Try that one!
