My parents are in their late 80's they just had a new unit put in their mobile home. They were told NOT to use the unit when it rains. It is very technical and they don't understand why. But it is 90 degrees in Sebring FL and it is raining and they said they can't take the heat. I don't know the company that put it in or the name of their unit. I just know my father told me the men told him NEVER to use his central air conditioning when it rains. I really need your help on this.

I've been in the htg and air business for 25 years...Rain has NOTHING to do with the cooling process that is carried out by freon. Run it...you have always been able to. More questions? Let me know.

Tell them to turn it on. If the unit for some reason fails then it will be covered by warranty. The installer odviously didn't do something correct if you can't run it in the rain. There is NOTHING inside of a central air unit that can be harmed by running in the rain.

I live in Sebring Florida as well. The only time we turn it off is when its lightening out. We also have central air. When Hurricane Ernesto gets closer, tell them to let it run until just before the storm hits. If we lose power, like we did in Charley, Frances and Jeane, two years ago, when the power does come back on, turn it on slowly, slowly lowering it, as not to drain too much power. Also they should already know where the shelters are located at.

Tell em to get cool. If it doesn't work, they have a warranty. Sounds rather fishy to me, hopefully they got a legitimate deal. You might want to see if the installers got the proper permits that are likely required---maybe they were not licensed or not licensed to do the electrical part of the install and are afraid there might be a short which could be a fire hazard. On second thought, don't tell them to use it in the rain until you make sure the installation was properly done and your parents are not at risk.

Of course you can run your air conditioner when it rains. That is kind of stupid for someone to tell them that they can not do that especially when it is very hot outside. What is the reason for having an air conditioner anyway? We use ours all summer - rain or shine.

I don't believe anyone has ever heard of an air conditioner you can't run in the rain. Sounds to me like something screwy is going on.

There is no reason they can't use the air conditioner when it rains.

In light to moderate rain, no problem. I would advise them to avoid use in VERY heavy down pours. C.T. Sacramento, CA

Please tell them to use the A/C. Then try to find out what the so called "technical" reasons were for not using it. I'll bet that they misunderstood something the installer said. If not, please let the rest of us know what crazy information was told them.
