If you have a land line, just plug the phone cord extention into the back of your computer. This will give you a phone connection on your computer. You need a double line output from your wall connection. One line for phone one for the extention to your computer. Really don't need the phone modem, there should be one in your computer.

It's NOT one or the other, you can have both. There are plenty of things that you could connect to.

Basically, a modem is just another type of weird network card. Just install it and configure it to connect to what you want.

More specifics would help a lot.

Why? If you use a Dial up you will not have a DSL connection. It is one or the other.
