I want to buy a leopard gecko but I don't want it to be sick when I get it. I don't want anything to die while it is in my home.

theres a few ways to tell:
if they have a fat tail, it is a sign of good health. geckos with skinny tails are often sick geckos.
you also want to know how its appetite is. ask someone at the pet store to drop in some food (crickets, mealworms, etc), and see what it does. a gecko with a strong appetite also means its healthy.
another way to tell, is by how active it is. naturally geckos are more active at night, but become more accustomed to day. ask if it is active. a gecko that lies around a lot, or very lanquid isnt often healthy.
also ask about where it spends most of its time. if ts spends too much time in its basking area, it could be sick. if its habitat doesnt have the proper temperature/humidity, it can make it sick, by losing appetite, or by becoming very unactive. a gecko who spends to much time in its colder area, could be sick as well, because it isnt regulating its body temperature. it could be too hot in its habitat, or its not getting enough to eat, or has a loss of appetite from beng ill. a gecko uses it basking area to hellp regulate its body temperature, especially when digesting food.
a pet store should let you handle it and ask whatever you want before you purchase it. if not, go somewhere else. or you may be able to find a breeder in your area.

My seven year old brother has kept two alive for a year and they even laid eggs. When you buy them, if they are white they are shedding, which is normal just give them a rock to help, and they will have sensitive skin for a day or so after they shed. If they have a lump in in their tails, that means they still have their 'safety tails' which means they could lose it in a fight, if they don't then they lost their safety tails and have their permanent tail. They are supposed to have yellow bodies with black spots. They will usually stand out from the others if they are sick, if they look normal but their sick, then the store probably doesn't know. Besides, they wouldn't keep a sick lizard sick because they could make the other animals sick.

They should look healthy, and have bright eyes.
An easy one for Leopard Geckos is how fat their tail is. A nice, big, fat tail means they are healthy.
Just look at them and see what you think.
Go to another pet store, too, that will let you handle them before you buy. That is nonsense.

Their eyes will be gloomy and they will not eat! they will also get scared and bite you! if you do notice these signs get the best treatment you can get for them and take them to a vet that are experienced in reptiles!
