Mobile homes were first to use the four prong connection but has since been carried over to any installation of an electric dryer or electric range. You need to replace the three prong plug on your dryer to a four prong.

Four prong cords have a red, black, white and green wire. At the back of the dryer the red and black wires are connected to the two outside terminals and the white is connected to the center post. The green wire is connected to the cabinet where there is usually a green screw. If there is not a green screw you can fasten it under one of the screws that hold the cover onto the dryer

Appliance Guy answer is correct except on a dryer with a three wire plug the center connection where the white wire is connected will also be connected to the cabinet for ground. This strap or wire from the center terminal to ground must be removed when using a four wire cord..

Don't use an adaptor, you will probably will have to rewire the plug in from the fuse-box. make sure electric is off and you need two hot wires and a ground probably 20 amp circuit breaker or 20 amp fuse. one wire from each side of box and then the ground. If not sure, play it safe and ask a friend to take a look or a professional electrician.

It is usually safer to upgrade the outlet. You can get an updated outlet from a hardware store. It comes with instructions, but if you are still unsure how to do it, then call an electrician. It isn't worth burning down your home over.
