The surface of the earth shows fewer meteor impact craters no messages when compared to the surface of mercury or our own moon, which show thousands of impact craters each? Think of four specific reasons to explain this. For each reason, indicate why is has an effect on the number of craters seen.

The answer to this question is errosion (wind, water, rain, etc). The earth is impacted by a proportionate number of meteors as all other planets. However, wind and water errode the impact craters. Consider this, a metor lands in the desert, creating a crater. How long will it be until a sandstorm comes along and erases the crater. Most likely sometime in the next year, so in 12 months you will no longer be able to see the impact crater. Considering that an object like the moon has no wind or rain, basically every impact crater that was formed on the moon is still there. So after thousands or millions of years, there are tons of impact craters visible.

2. Weather - craters are eroded by wind, rain, sand, etc.
3. Geologically acive planet - volcanoes, earthquakes, etc, constantly reshape our surface.
4. Oceans - Earth is mostly covered by oceans, so meteors are more likely to impact in an ocean, leaving no trace.

Two main reasons. Our atmosphere causes burn up of debris(meteorites), and our planetary weather causes erosion over millions of years. Our location in the Milky Way, and our orbit around the Sun, may put Earth out of the main meteorite shower areas.
