I don't like Walmart because the grocery store that I used to work at had to close down because of them. I worked 40 hours a week, home before 6 p.m, every other weekend off, had 2 weeks vacation every year, and lived less than 1 1/2 miles away from my work. I knew Walmart would shut us down, so I went and applied there. I didn't get hired! They didn't like the fact that I wanted to get paid $6.80 an hour (what I got paid at the other place). And they couldn't guarantee me at least 25 hours a week. So, I got a job in a factory. I get paid well. Good benefits. I now get 2 weeks vacation after being there 4 years. But my shift is from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. And I often have to come in 2 hours early or stay 4 hours over. And of course there is Saturday work. And I have to drive 52 miles 5 to 6 days a week. But like alot of small town people, I don't have alot of options for shopping. I hate their hamburger meat, the clothes don't fit my daughters very well, I am too old for Juniors, too thin for Just My Size, and not pregnant for Maternity. Some of the employees look like meth heads (especially the 3rd shifters). I could go on and on, but I won't....

As a Wal Mart employee I am suppose to say that I love Wal Mart and that it is a great place to work. But the reality is that it is just like any other business. They are there to make money. Not enough workers so everyone is pushed to the limit. If you bring in a union the pay goes up but so does the cost to the consumer. Fewer customers means fewer jobs.
I will say however that the concept that Sam Walton started out with was a mom and pop concept - Family, Community and God, -but the new structures and regulations at today's Wal Marts have lost the original meaning.
So in the end its a job!

Most people are misinformed about Wal-Mart. Their Wages and benefits depend on state and region, not Wal-Mart...If you get paid $ 6.50 an hour blame your state governor not Wal-Mart. Chances are Wal-Mart is paying you well above the minimum wage,so suck it up it, could be worse. I work in a small store and well over 70% of the employees are full time and part time associates DO receive benefits. Most people are unaware that Wal-Mart will help pay for college and education, vacations, car loans, house loans and not to mention the stock options. What I have noticed is people get stuck on a certain issue and it effects their work, therefore when it comes time for your yearly evaluation you get less than what you think is fair, most people don't realize just how lazy they are...If they had just done their job put on a wonderful smile they would have gotten a fair raise. I've worked there for 2 years and I make almost as much as the lazy people who have been there for 8. I have benefits, I'm full time and Wal-Mart is helping me with my continuing education. So Yes I do love Wal-Mart.

The Wal-mart where i live is the biggest in California. In my opinion it's also one of the cleanest and well kept.It also has a grocery department with the most selection I've ever seen (better than Albertson's or Food Max). I get everything i need there. So yea i love it.
About the low wages and bad benefits; The people who work there chose to! Also, I believe workers DO get benefits after working there a certain amount of time.
About wal-Mart taking business from "Mom-and Pop" stores; They should lower their prices to keep up. If they can't then too bad for them.

Wal-Mart does provide low cost health insurance, they do offer 401-K and profit sharing. It's called progress, either progress and get with the times like Wal-Mart has done for it's 1.5 million employee's or get out of the way. Either way Wal-Marts prices are low, and where else can you return a 13 year old lap top computer with no reciept and get your money back with a smile? People can speak for themselves and don't need a union to do it for them @ Wal-Mart. Anyway, I would be lost without a super Wal-Mart down the street. Thanks for the question!

i worked for walmart for about a year and a half, and as long as your a full time employee, you get benefits after 6 months of working there. (be it all, my benefits were awful, they only covered about half my bills, and my bills were still in excess of $2000, as my husband was ill) but i could have chosen to pay a little more out of every paycheck to blue cross and get better coverage, i just didn't. so that's just not true.
its true, about mom and pop stores, they do take away business, but in the rural areas, where there are no mom and pop stores, and you live an hour away (one way) from any store at all, it truly is a blessing to get a walmart put in anywhere. so please dont look at it like that. just because the more populated areas of America are being burdened by the way they choose to do business doesn't mean other areas of America aren't benefiting from it.

I don't love wal-mart and I don't hate them. I will clarify.
They offer benefits to full time employees only. They way they get around not paying benefits is they will hire you "part-time" and then tell you 36 hours is part-time for them.
Yes the pay stinks starts around $6.50 hr - $7.00 hr depending on experience. Their raises are by the percentage. They are anywhere from a 3% to the full 5% raise. So it isn't much if you are only making $6.50 hr.
They are fighting very hard to keep the union out by intimidation. They will fire you quickly if you start talking union.

Both. There are a lot of things that I really hate about Wal-mart including the service, or lack of, but every time I try to get away from them I keep coming back because of the prices.

I love Wal Mart. They offer very low prices, good selection, and are easily accessible in my area. Not only that, they are innovators in business strategy and they eliminate wasteful, inefficient competition.
I think Wal Mart is great. It's not always pleasant to shop there, but I prefer it to the other stores in the area.

You hear so much about Wal Mart because it is the biggest chain store. You can't complain if you take a job that you know does not have benefits.
